The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
