Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Rock Fans

It has been 20 years since Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the opportunity to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try telling that anyone who's mastered the epic lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, creating the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio had already experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable impact on numerous musicians featured, showcasing classic bands to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero took off, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish group one featured act had their track on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon remembers the way the game brought older hits to the forefront: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, but then when it was included in the game and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it was cool. That legitimised the genre, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's first record remained not available stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the group during their a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and related stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold more than half a million copies upon release, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo while hitting every one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician Herman Li.

The band previously completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember our distributors informing us that we were selling albums rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments died down, aside from a brief comeback in 2015.

Games like the fan project and newer releases have kept the community alive, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden where you can update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t persist for future fans.”
