Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his £25k award cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on 16 October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the past year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part local spots played in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges arising from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations received monetary aid in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and audiences.

"The concept that money from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Previously, they gave their funds to the local youth club that supported their band, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year they contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the cake. So our success impacted another person's life."

Recently, the MVT shared it had saved a couple of small stages in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the second in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "shares" in the buildings.
