Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
