US Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Concerns of Future Danish Territory Acquisition.

The latest American bombardment in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have ignited worry regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Members of the ex-president's base have allegedly set their sights on the strategically important island in the wake of the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely a short time after the initiation of the Caracas campaign, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt threat to absorb the resource-abundant land, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and strong criticism from Denmark's representatives.

"We are close allies and should keep cooperate as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had substantially increased its military budget recently, earmarking a large sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we demand full recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Moves and Strategic Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly expressed gratitude to the president, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, linking it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the US president has consistently unnerved European allies with his stated interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for national security and future resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a significant media appearance, the president refused to rule out the use of military force to gain control of Greenland. This position comes during intensifying global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Tensions and Local Resistance

In response to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Danish security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a unified and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the territory's residents seek self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek independence for over a decade.

Expert View: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had once discounted the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she observed.
