Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
